If you have an Apple Watch Series 1 or later, your watch can record your HRV data automatically. As soon as it does, we'll do the math and send the measurement results to your feed. However, note that Apple Watch automatically measures your heart rate variability only when you are calm and relaxed.
In the past, Garmin detected the HRV values through the heart rate band, but users had to face the discomfort of the heart rate band. Now, you can download the app through the Garmin Connect IQ store, and can use the wrist optical heart rate to carry out HRV measurement.
HRV is simply a measure of the variation in time between each heartbeat. This variation is controlled by a primitive part of the nervous system called the autonomic nervous system (ANS). It works behind the scenes, automatically regulating our heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and digestion among other key tasks.

Decreased heart rate variability (HRV) is associated with adverse outcomes in cardiovascular diseases and has been observed in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study assessed HRV in 53 SLE patients with a 5-minute KardiaMobile ECG.
HRV is highest at night (between about 10pm and 2am). This shows that the body is at its most relaxed, and in fact much of the important recovery and repair takes place during this period. HRV is at its lowest between about 9am and midday.
