Burning calories forces your body to access energy stored in the form of fat. Similarly, burning fat, while keeping your calorie intake low, will make your body use more of the calories you have just consumed and store less of them.
These 'extra' calories burned because of physical activity are your ACTIVE calories. Your TOTAL calories, on the other hand, includes both your ACTIVE calories as well as the calories your body burns at rest during that timeframe.
Total calories are the sum of active and passive calories burned throughout the day. This information is not available to view on your watch, but it's available on your iPhone: Launch the Fitness app on your iPhone. On the Summary screen, tap on your Activity section.
Total calories include - basal calories + calories burned when doing a workout. Active calories are those that are burned during some activity like swimming running or anything else where your body is moving, Basal are those that your body burns during a day without any activity.
Active calories come from physical activity. When you run, walk, or swim your body burns calories faster than when you're resting. But sitting on the couch also burns calories. This is why total calories includes those burned through physical activity plus the ones your body burns just by doing its natural processes.

With up to date personal information, your Apple Watch calculates your body's Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). These are the calories that your body burns while at rest. It then adds the active calories from exercise to give you an accurate estimate of the total calories you burn during the day.
All replies. Active Calories (active energy) are calories that you burn by standing, moving around or other activity (including workouts). Active calories + resting calories (those used each day when your body is minimally active) = total calories. Thank you!
