Optimize storage space
Delete unneeded media, such as music or movies or podcasts, which can use a lot of storage space. Delete unneeded files in the Downloads folder. You can open the Downloads folder from the Dock or by choosing Go > Downloads from the menu bar in the Finder. Delete unneeded email in the Mail app.
Open the View menu and select Show status bar. This will show you how many items are in the current folder, and if you're viewing a folder on your hard drive (such as your Applications or Documents folder), you'll also get a readout of your hard drive's free space.
Here's where to find it.
Click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of your desktop and select About This Mac. Select the Storage tab. This nifty screen sorts your storage by file type so you can see what's in your Mac's storage.

On iCloud.com, you can see how much iCloud storage you have and how much is available.
On your device, open your Settings menu and head into “General”, and then iPhone Storage. The color coded bar will show how your available storage is divvied up, with "Other" appearing as a gray color. It may take a few seconds to calculate the full rundown, so just give it a bit of time.
Available storage space includes free storage space and purgeable disk caches (disk space might be both available and used at the same time). To save additional storage space, use the custom storage recommendations for optimizing storage on your Mac. To view these options, click Manage.
