Manually adjust brightness
Turn your Mac keyboard's backlighting on or off
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Keyboard , then click Keyboard. Select “Adjust keyboard brightness in low light.”
While the M1 MacBook Air has a 400 nits brightness, the M1 MacBook Pro sports a higher 500 nits brightness. It doesn't make a difference if you're using it indoors, but having that extra 100 nits would make a difference if you're using the laptop in direct sunlight.

It packs True Tone and its colors are plenty accurate, but we'd be lying if we said it pales in comparison to the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro displays, or the iPad Pro's mini-LED backlighting… and yet, this display is still pretty great. While its brightness is less, it never feels too low.
The Fn key is usually located to the left of the spacebar. The brightness function keys may be located at the top of your keyboard, or on your arrow keys. For example, on the Dell XPS laptop keyboard (pictured below), hold the Fn key and press F11 or F12 to adjust the brightness of the screen.
Our colorimeter also rates the new MacBook Air's display as producing up to 365.8 nits of brightness (a bit below the company's 400-nit estimate), which makes it similar to the display of the Intel-based MacBook Air (386 nits) and the ZenBook 13 (370 nits).
Use Function Keys on the Mac Keyboard Macs give preference to media keys instead of function keys. So you can press the F10 button to mute the volume, the F11 button to decrease the volume, and the F12 button increases the volume.
Adjust volume with Siri
The Control Strip, located at the right end of the Touch Bar, lets you use Siri or easily adjust common settings—just tap the buttons or, for settings like brightness and volume, quickly swipe left or right on the buttons.
